The endorsement letter below enthusiastically communicates the Library’s satisfaction with Modern Makers’s successful participation in their Summer Reading Program. The collaboration was entirely natural; two organizations that value the arts are destined to do great things together!

This letter is to wholeheartedly recommend Modern Makers, and owner Debbie Carty, as a very special community partner and generous participant in our summer reading programs and craft events.
The library’s goal with our annual Summer Reading Program is to encourage summer reading, and community partners help us achieve that by providing incentives in the form of coupons and prizes for the readers to redeem at the community partners’ place of business.
For several years now, Modern Makers has been participating in the library’s summer reading program for children Pre-K through 6th grade, by providing coupons, not just at Solvang Branch but at all the branches of the Santa Barbara Public Library System .. Every child who read 10 books in the program can bring their coupon to Modern Makers to paint their own “Willy the Bookworm”, or, this year, a bisque “Reading Champion” trophy. In terms of numbers of coupons asked for, Modern Makers’ commitment this year was up to 6,000 coupons. The coupon Modern Makers gives is especially valued by both parents and children because it offers a chance to participate in a creative activity.
The second way in which Modern Makers has assisted the library in bringing arts and a creative experience to children was to co-sponsor Solvang Branch Library’s craft workshop and entry into the town’s 4th of July parade. Every year the library uses the Summer Reading program theme to hold a workshop in which children, teens and their families can make a walking entry for the parade. Modern Makers came up with a creative idea, prepared and provided materials, and sent staff to the library to run the workshop, all free of charge to the library. Every child who had signed up for the reading program could make a Reading Champion T-shirt, free of charge, at Modern Makers, and at the library workshop they made individual pennants with one word which celebrated how reading makes them feel. Modern Makers also made a big banner to carry in the parade. The turnout for the parade entry was over 50, and the library won “Best Children’s entry.”
Throughout both the Summer Reading program and the Parade Craft workshop process, Modern Makers, Debbie, and staff were very organized, reliable, and flexible, providing written materials to support and explain the coupons and the crafts, and how children could access both. For example, children who could not attend the parade craft workshop but wanted to be in the parade were allowed to drop into Modern Makers over that weekend to make their pennant. Additionally, Modern Makers made extra efforts to ensure that children who had won the 10 book coupon, but could not travel to their Solvang facility, had a chance to redeem their coupon, by setting up a “pop-up” table at the Santa Barbara Public Market on several Saturdays in July and August.
I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
